Indoor vs Outdoor Padel Courts: A Business Comparison

Indoor vs Outdoor Padel Courts: A Business Comparison

Few decisions affect a padel club’s economics as much as whether courts sit indoors, outdoors or under a cover. Each model carries a different cost, a different season and a different ceiling on revenue.

There is no universally right answer — only the right answer for your climate, your capital and your market. Here is how the three options actually compare on the numbers that matter.

Outdoor: low cost, weather-dependent

Outdoor courts are the cheapest to build and the fastest to open, which makes them tempting for a first project or a tight budget.

The trade-off is unavoidable: rain, heat and cold cut into usable hours. In many climates revenue simply collapses for several months a year, and a court that cannot be played cannot be sold — the empty months still carry the full fixed cost.

Indoor: premium and year-round

Indoor courts cost substantially more — structure, height, ventilation and lighting all add up — but they deliver consistent, year-round occupancy and command higher prices.

In most of Europe and the Gulf, indoor is where the durable, fundable business lives. The higher capital is offset by twelve months of stable revenue and a premium players will pay for comfort.

Covered: the middle path

Fixed or pressurised covers protect courts at a fraction of a full indoor build, extending the season dramatically while keeping capital under control.

For many founders this is the smartest first step: most of the year-round upside for far less of the upfront risk, with the option to enclose fully later as demand proves itself.

  • Climate and usable playing days per year
  • Capital available and payback target
  • Local tolerance for premium indoor pricing
  • Land height and planning permissions

We model all three scenarios side by side with real numbers, so the decision is financial rather than emotional. The right format is the one your projection recommends, not the one your instinct prefers — and seeing them compared is often what makes the choice obvious.
